As environmental awareness increases, lightweighting of automobiles has become a key strategy for meeting the stringent requirements on air emissions. But is weight reduction always a sensible strategy in the sense of sustainable development? Life cycle assessment is a sustainable product management tool to analyze the environmental impacts of products. This paper examines the environmental performance of light-weight-construction against sustainable manufacturing in case of engine production.
