Design and fabrication of a smart punching bag with micro energy generator

In recent years, embedded systems technology has found innovative applications in many fields, including sports. As commercial off-the-shelf hardware like sensors, actuators, controllers and networks have become cheaper, smaller and more capable, they can be embedded in stationary and portable systems, improving performance, training, comfort, safety, and economy. The performance data can be analyzed using algorithms for identifying scope for improvements, leading to so-called smart systems. In this paper, an innovative smart punching bag is designed and developed as a training tool for boxers. The data on force exerted by the boxer on the punching bag is logged along with timing data and a smart phone app is developed for communicating the performance analysis to the trainer and trainee over Bluetooth. The prototype is constructed at low cost using commercial-off-the-shelf components and materials and free open source software. The paper also describes a micro energy generator which generates electricity from the punching action and can be used to promote the awareness of renewable energy and encourage exercise and interaction. The smart punching bag will enable boxing coaches to monitor their athletes' performance over time and help them identify weaknesses for remediation and avenues for improvement.
