Ship to shore electric interconnection: From adolescence to maturity

In this paper, the appealing perspectives of applying alternative maritime power (`cold ironing') in ports are analyzed and discussed on the occasion of a promising European funded project, namely ELEMED. It is shown that besides the obvious environmental advantages, other benefits can be introduced, like the ports being smart energy hubs exploiting the smart-grid.
