Dispersion compensated coherent optical dual polarization OFDM using QAM

There has been a huge demand for network capacity and data rates in long-haul to home networks, with the key drivers being cloud based computing/storage and Internet of Things. Radio over Fiber (RoF) combined with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a facilitating technique for high data rates and long-haul transmission. This paper demonstrates the simulation of 100 Gbps transmission on a single wavelength over a long haul - SMF link. Transmission performances of QAM, Coherent OFDM and Coherent DP OFDM schemes are compared in order to determine the maximum length of the transmission link for each of the scheme with and without dispersion compensation. For a typical rate of 10Gbps, Coherent DP OFDM with QAM scheme with/without dispersion compensation can provide transmission distances of 900 km and 9000km respectively. The Constellation diagrams also show an improvement of 20dB in the OSNR.
