Broadband dual-bandpass frequency selective surfaces based on intra- and inter-element couplings

In this letter, we propose to design dual-bandpass frequency selective surface (FSS) based on both the intra- and inter-element couplings. To obtain the two broadband passbands, antisymmetric modes are introduced alternatively by intra- and inter-element couplings of the bi-layered structure. By retrieving the effective surface electromagnetic parameters, the transmission performance of the FSS is analyzed using the effective medium theory. A prototype was fabricated and measured. The experiment results are in good agreement with the simulation. The design method in this work provides an effective way of designing and analyzing multi-band FSSs.
