A view of teaching electromagnetism to undergraduates in Karlsruhe, FRG

The teaching of electromagnetism in the electrical engineering department at Karlsruhe is described. In the first two years of undergraduate studies, static electromagnetic problems are dealt with in courses on the basics of electricity. The students then take an interim examination, fairly well comparable to the bachelor's. Following this examination, the students have to pass compulsory lectures, after which they can specialize in one of fourteen areas. Three of these deal primarily with electromagnetism: theoretical electrotechnology; RF and microwaves; and optical communication. For nearly all lectures, the professors write their own textbooks, but a number of well-recognized international books are also recommended.<
