D2D Communication for Adaptive Streaming Exploiting White Spaces in Transmissions of the Cellular Network

This letter presents a device-to-device (D2D) communication architecture for adaptive streaming services that exploits white spaces in real-time transmissions of the primary LTE cellular system on the downlink. The D2D users transmit only when the LTE service pool is instantaneously empty. The proposed architecture leads to an efficient performance of D2D network with a significant increase of the overall network traffic capacity, accommodating a variety of bit-rate streaming services, without affecting the performance of the LTE system.
