Security provisioning for RESTful web services in Internet of Things

Internet of Things (IoT) is a technological revolution which provides the vision of connected world of Things. But varieties of technological challenges are there which restrict its full adoption in our day to day life. Among them Privacy and security are the area of major concern in IoT. This paper focuses on the communication with RESTful web services via mobile client in the context of IoT. For communication with RESTful web services, SSL/TLS security is used to ensure authenticity, integrity and confidentiality of user's data which is less efficient for IoT mobile clients with limited battery capacity, memory as well as processing capacity. So we have proposed a light weight security approach in terms of lower processing time and lower messaging overhead which provides better results. From the implementation we found that proposed security system performs better than existing SSL/TLS in terms of both parameters named processing time and messaging overhead. We have used light weight data forms like JSON and Plain text which further improves communication performance by consuming less bandwidth than XML.
