An electromagnet-assisted ferrite magnet motor

EV/HEV traction motors are required to have contradictory characteristics such as high torque at low speeds and low torque at high speeds. To meet this requirement, our research group is studying a synchronous motor with a new structure.This paper proposes an electromagnet-assisted ferrite magnet motor (EMaFM) with a double-gap structure which generates the torque by using both ferrite magnets and electromagnets. The proposed EMaFM has the field regulation capability while utilizing the ferrite magnets.magnets. To validate its operating principle, a prototype machine is designed and manufactured. In addition, the electromagnetic performance of the prototype machine is simulated using finite element analysis (FEA) and is supported by experiments.
