Collaborative monitoring of marine fauna

This paper describes the current development of a collaborative monitoring tool, via smartphones and Web applications that allows the community to generate and share information about geolocalized sightings of marine fauna. Agencies such as WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) or other agencies interested in studying the considered species may use the generated data to support their conservation mission, identify if the productive activity in the area generates any impact on the life of these animals or perform diverse scientific studies about changes in behavioral patterns, among other possible applications. Initial tests were conducted on the shoreline of Chiloé Island, in the south of Chile, allowing the generation of a small database and a map of sightings.
