Making mobile IP more efficient

With the proliferation of compact laptops and notebook computers, and the spread of wireless network interfaces, the mobility of hosts connected to a network is becoming an important issue. Perkins (see IEEE Communications Magazine, p.84-99, 1997) proposed a mobile IP protocol, which relies on mobility support routers (MSR) and provides continuous network connectivity to the mobile hosts. These MSRs are points of connectivity of a current static network where mobile nodes attach themselves. In this paper we report the simulation of the above mobile IP and give results of its performance study. We then suggest a modification to it wherein packets intended for the mobile host travel shorter routes in certain situations, resulting in lesser delays.
