Trends in telecommunications networks and their effects on power systems

The array of new services postulated for the telecommunications networks of the early 21st Century is difficult to comprehend and seems to grow almost without limit. In this paper, the authors examine voice, Internet, broadband, wireless and satellite services, including the transmission media and network hardware that are needed for these services. They also discuss the need for power reductions in portable terminals, and examine a few of the many other predictions for telecommunications in the next century. With knowledge of the issues, problems and choices faced by telecommunications service providers, they can be worked with to ensure that power for their equipment will help them provide the reliable services demanded by their customers.
