A decentralized control strategy with dc fault handling capability for smart dc buildings

This work addresses control and dc fault protection of a smart dc building by proposing a decentralized scheme using only local measurements. The dc building integrates distributed generation and energy storage units through power converters to guarantee sufficient energy capacity for ac and dc loads. A voltage source converter is employed to interface the building with utility grid. The dc building architecture is highly vulnerable to dc fault since it can paralyze whole units until the fault is totally cleared. An effective protection scheme is presented to immediately identify and isolate faulty section to protect sensitive power electronics components from the high fault current. Furthermore, a resilient decentralized controller is proposed to ensure accurate dc bus voltage regulation, precise power management, and fast system restoration after fault clearance. Hardware-in-the-loop studies are conducted to verify the proposed system performance.
