A new design of Flywheel Energy Storage System based on a double star Asynchronous machine associated to Wind Energy

To date, the big problem of wind turbines installed in the world is that they not participate to the ancillary (voltage regulation, frequency regulation, black-start...). Hence, this fact should be modified due of the great increase in their penetration rate in the grid. This is because of the first source of these systems of energy production (wind) which is very random and unpredictable nature. For this reason, and to guarantee the production / consumption equilibrium, energy storage systems are envisaged. The storage system should be faster to work on line respect with the produced and consumed power fluctuations respectively. Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) is suitable for this kind of application because of its features: high performance, good efficiency, long lifetime (similar to the wind generators), ecological system, which is enough to improve the quality of the energy. In this work, our aim is to develop a simple FESS used double star Asynchronous machine (DSIM) associated to Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). The presented strategy is used to a WECS based on a Dual Star Induction Generator (DSIG). The presented FESS is used not only to smooth wind power fluctuations, but also to adjust the frequency and the voltage of the grid during operating conditions. The suggested FESS contains a power electronic converter supplying the DSIM connected to a flywheel. Numerical results of 1.5MW DSIG system are provided to show the feature of control method and the large interest of energy storage in such WECS.
