Design and Test of Superconducting Magnet in a 50 kW Superconducting Synchronous Generator

Superconducting magnet (SM) plays a crucial role in the success or failure of a superconducting generator. The SM of a 50 kW superconducting synchronous generator (SSG) was studied in this paper. Magnesium diboride superconducting wires are employed to wind the SM. First, the initial structure of SM is designed by finite element modeling. After which an approach based on response surface methodology and particle swarm optimization is used to optimize the initial structure of SM. Finally, in order to verify whether the designed SM conforms the requirements of the 50 kW SSG, the SM is made and tested by the optimized size. The results indicate that the designed SM can better meet the requirements.
