Lighting regulation considering visual functions

When developing a lighting systems one should rely on two main points: energy efficiency and safety of visual (ocular) functions. A promising approach to significant improvement of efficiency of the automated lighting control is a function of smooth dimming power of light sources, which allows changing luminous flux depending on the level of natural light. Realization of smooth dimming function requires development of specialized controllers. Systems regulating luminous flux due to pulse width modulation, by changing the duty ratio of the signal over a wide range, may be undesirable in terms of visual organ safety. A mathematical model of perception of vision lighting pulsation allows us to formulate requirements for adaptive lighting systems. Modeling adaptive and inertial properties of vision organs shows that some intermittent lamp operation modes are not admissible for visual organ health: negative visual sensations are maximized at equal duration of light and dark phases.
