Analysis of optimum diversity combining and decision feedback equalization in dispersive Rayleigh fading

This paper presents a simplified derivation of the structure and performance of the optimum diversity combiner/decision feedback equalizers, previously derived by Balaban and Salz (1992). Our analysis is based on fundamental results of linear prediction and estimation theory. New closed-form expressions that benchmark the performance of these receivers in a two-beam slowly Rayleigh fading channel having equal and unequal mean strength paths are provided. The results give insight into the benefits of utilizing space diversity and decision feedback equalization in a frequency-selective fading environment.
