Reasoning with Awareness and for Awareness: Realizing an Aware System Using an Expert System

Big data, the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, and automatic car driving are several current hot topics, and artificial intelligence (AI) is behind each of them. AI is now supported by both governments and private companies. The overall trend is positive; however, it seems that we are relying too much on money, resources, and power. To create AI that can solve all kinds of problems efficiently and effectively, we should also investigate and solve many fundamental problems. In this article, I will focus on awareness, which is a bridge connecting sensory data to perception and cognition. Formally, I model an aware system using a nested structure. That is, each aware system consists of many aware modules (AMs), and, recursively, each AM is an aware system consisting of smaller modules. I will introduce a method for realizing an aware system using an expert system, and this method provides a way to obtain aware systems inductively from sensory data. In fact, it may also provide another support to AI from the ground.
