Developing IEEE P21451 compatible IoT networks utilizing readily available development platforms

The increasing popularity of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) means that there is little conformity among IoT development environments. This has led to the creation of a large number of IoT devices and applications, which are based on proprietary approaches. In order to facilitate more interoperability among IoT devices and applications, the ISO/IEC/IEEE P21451 family of standards is currently being updated. To facilitate rapid testing and development of smart transducer networked devices, we describe our work, which is focused on developing implementations and libraries of code to work with readily available embedded development platforms. We describe the preliminary work accomplished to date for developing compliant network entities as well as progress toward developing a building-sized test bed for this standard. With our initial work, students and researchers at Rowan University will have access to a living smart sensor network which can be used both as a development platform as well as a research opportunity.
