Power loss analysis in single-step, single-inductor energy-harvesting-based power supplies

All types of losses in single-step, single-inductor power supplies for energy-harvesting applications are derived. The single-step energy-harvesting-based power supplies rely on delivering input power to the load using a single power conversion stage. Thus, it alleviates the problem of employing two cascaded power converter stages that exist in the conventional energy-harvesting power supplies. Therefore, the single-step power supplies offer a significant reduction in the overall losses compared to the conventional supplies. In this work, a breakdown of all losses in the single-step power supplies that operate in the CCM mode is proposed to help determining the dominant loss, which leads to achieving an optimum design with a high efficiency.
