Dual-frequency antenna for PCS handsets

A dual-frequency monopole antenna for mobile handheld units has been designed that can operate in both frequency bands allocated for PCS (personal communication service) system. The bandwidth obtained for the antenna is 19.3% and 11.2% for the lower and higher PCS band, respectively with VSWR≤2. The Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to obtain the optimum dimensions of the antenna and its different characteristics with and without the presence of the user's head. The resultant deposition of the microwave power in the user's head, called the specific absorption rate (SAR) has also been calculated.
