Active dual band dual polarized microstrip array panel

A dual-band array has the potential of increasing the information content of spaceborne SAR systems. Recent studies show that the combination of L & C band frequencies provides improved characterization data Ref.[1]. The Canadian Space Agency is undertaking a project for the development of new integration and on-board calibration techniques for a dual band active array. The integration approach consists of a light multilayer panel using microstrip radiating elements at L & C bands, together with RF feed network layers, a DC distribution layer, control signal distributions layer and feed network layers for the T/R modules. These layers are integrated together on a single panel, using a lightweight, temperature stable mechanical support. The use of two independent RF distribution networks to support dual polarization, also allows for an on-board calibration technique, which will significantly reduce the alignment testing time and increase the beam accuracy. The final configuration will be tested in a near-field test range in pulse mode. This new technique of integration of all the signal distributions on a multilayer microstrip active array SAR antenna will also improve reliability by reducing the amount of cabling.
