Intelligent Tutoring System for learning English punctuation

There are many challenges people face while learning and writing English. Learning the proper use of punctuation is challenging for people of all ages. Due to enormous breakthroughs in computer technology, there has been a huge interest in the development of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) to help learners learn a language. We developed an ITS that helps students to learn the rules of English punctuation where students interactively punctuate an unpunctuated piece of sentence. The system offers text to student, in which they can perform the punctuation, and if necessary, make corrections. A student's answer is then analyzed by the system with possible correct solutions/hints, and gives specific feedback. The ITS was evaluated during several sessions for 10-11 year old school children. The evaluation results show that the children effectively acquired the skillset of comma and full stop rules represented in the system.
