Use of biobased oil's as a substitute of transformer oil

A large number of transformers of various voltage and capacity ratings are used in distribution system. Large and medium capacity transformers use mineral oil for cooling. Small capacity transformers for outdoor application are oil filled whereas for indoor applications dry type or synthetic oil filled transformers are generally used. A huge quantity of crude oil is imported for producing petrol, diesel, mineral oil etc. In view of the high cost of mineral oil, it was proposed to explore the possibility of making use of jatropha oil and karanj oil for transformer cooling. The results of the study are quite encouraging.
