An Improved Method of Dispersing CAD Models Based on Equidistant Sampling Theory

To deal with the problem in dispersing CAD model to point cloud data, an improved method based on equidistant sampling theory was put forward, dealing with the STL format of the model. The scatter algorithm consists of the following parts. Firstly, selecting a triangular facet in the STL file and mapping the facet normal and vertex to the two-dimensional plane by a suitable rigid transformation. Then Sampling points based on equidistant sampling theory and deleting points outside of the triangle in the two-dimensional plane simultaneously. Finally, Mapping inversely the retained scatter points to the three-dimensional space. In the scatter algorithm, the sampling intervals can be adjusted as you need to control the density of the resulting point cloud data. At the end of the paper, an example has been developed with the hole of a cabin to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the scatter algorithm. The results show our method has the advantage of adjustability, wide range of applications and high quality of the resulting point cloud data.
