Strategies and types of national design of a ROADM transmission network for universal access

In this paper, strategies and appropriate Reconfigurable Optical Add Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) network architectures for universal access have been investigated. Universal access is a challenge for every country, government and in particular developing countries. One of the big issues is the lack of sufficient funds to support the deployment. Advantages in ROADM functionalities can help mitigate the investment. A bottom up step approach (BUSA) and a top down step approach (TDSA) strategies are presented. We proposed an optimal approach that led us to use mathematical tools of operational research to ensure connectivity of all cities of a given territory. Three main ROADM network designs were studied in the case of top down deployment approach. The efficiency of the network design leading to lower universal access funds to invest in transmission deployment is considered. It has been shown that secured economic transmission route (SETR) is the best trade-off between the not-secured economic transmission route (NSETR) and the optimized and secured transmission route (OSTR).
