An energy efficient base station deployment for mm-wave based wireless backhaul

Ultra-dense wireless networks have been considered as a promising system architecture to meet the exponentially increasing demand for wireless data traffic in recent years. Due to the large traffic load that is carried into the core network, one of the major impediments to the deployment of heterogeneous networks is access to cost-effective, reliable and scalable backhaul networks. Since traditional optical fiber backhaul is not always feasible, millimeter-wave was proposed as an alternative to enable backhauling in future wireless networks. In this paper, a greedy algorithm for energy-efficient base station deployment and dynamic operation is presented. This algorithm allows the micro base stations to dynamically adopt an energy-efficient operation mode to match the current traffic load. Simulation results show that a significant reduction in the energy consumption can be achieved when traffic profiles and the dynamic operation are considered.
