Selected measurement problems during the evaluation of occupational exposure to UV radiation emitted by the welding arc

The welding arc is a source of strong optical radiation, especially in UV and visual ranges of spectrum. Apart from the direct radiation emitted by the arc, the workplace is also exposed to radiation reflected from the surrounding as well as ambient radiation coming from an artificial light sources and the daylight. All of these factors affect the accuracy of evaluation of welder's exposition. It creates a demand for applying a proper method of measurement in order to reduce that impact. Selection of appropriate equipment capable of measuring a welding arc radiation in full UV and visual range as well as conducting proper measurements could be a challenge. The paper will present selected measuring problems encountered during the evaluation of UV radiation of welding arc. Based on the arc radiations of automated welding workstation using MAG method for range of welding parameters (welding current, arc length) measured with spectroradiometer.
