In 2011, Amani Al Hosani attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, an ambitious endeavor set to be built by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the coast of the Arabian Gulf about 50 km west of Ruwais. "Nothing was there," she says. "Just a desert and a Gulf."
