Application of 3D scanning onto automotive door panel for quality

An experimental investigation was conducted to explore the feasibility of replacing the current inspection method with 3D scanning for daily quality inspection in the automotive industry. This experiment was focused on inspecting stamped body parts due to the significant number of inspection points that could be time consuming for inspection activities. Two inspection methods were performed which include the application of the Checking Fixture (CF) (the current method) and the 3D scanner. Both inspections were performed on the same loose freeform surface of an outer door panel. Factors such as inspection duration, economics and data reliability were compared to understand the practicality of replacing the current inspection method with 3D scanning. It was found that using the 3D scanner has led to significant shorter inspection duration. It was also more economical with better data reliability. At the same time, it was unable to match the performance of the conventional inspection in terms of depth measurement and part edges. In conclusion, 3D scanning alone is insufficient to replace the current inspection method.
