Waveguide demonstration of active frequency selective surface in K-band

Frequency selective surface (FSS) is periodically patterned metal patches or complementary apertures etched on metal sheet, which spatially filters the incident electromagnetic waves. Recently, vast research interest has been drawn to the reconfigurability of FSS, where lumped elements are integrated to dynamically control the bandpass/bandstop response. While loaded with PIN diodes or varactors, the predetermined resonant frequency of FSS can be changed by applied DC voltage. In this paper, we present waveguide demonstration of active FSS in K-band, and investigate the influence of geometric parameter on the resonant frequency. The proposed sample is fabricated on a 1.6 mm-thick Taconic TLX-8 substrate. And MA4AGFCP910 PIN diodes are employed to dynamically change the electromagnetic response of the FSS. Simulations and experiments are taken in WR42 waveguide which works for K-band ranging from 17.6 GHz ~ 26.7 GHz.
