Building detection and extraction techniques: A review

Land development information is very essential for urban planning and its management. This information is required for policy making of land use, calculation of transportation infrastructure and in detection of future development area. This information is required to achieve sustainable urban development. Unauthorized land development is one of the growing problems in developing countries. Unauthorized land development caused sprawl which in turn affect healthy urban development. Therefore frequent land development detection on short interval is necessary. Building extraction through satellite images is gaining popularity and interest of many researchers. With the help of these building detection techniques governments or concern authorities can prevent unauthorized land developments and stop these at their early stage if any. In this article, relevant building detection technologies are reviewed and focus areas are identified.
