The influence of boundary conditions and alignment layers on the field controlled light scattering in S/sub A/ phase liquid crystal displays

In the present paper it is shown that the impact of electric field with optimum amplitude-frequency parameters is sufficient to induce formation of S/sub A/ liquid crystal (LC) basic optical states. There are stable focal (FC) conic light scattering structures and stable homeotropic (HT) light transmission structures of the S/sub A/ LC. The threshold of the electrohydrodynamic (EHD) instability and the optical losses of liquid crystal display (LCD) are decreased by the absence of the alignment layers. At the same time LCD design and technology is essentially simplified.
