The development of word processor--mainframe computer interaction

This paper addresses how peripheral word processing units have been modified into total workstations, enabling a user to perform multiple functions. Manuscripts can be prepared and edited, information can be passed to and extracted from the mainframe computer, and the mainframe's superior processing capabilities can be utilized. This is a viable alternative to the so-called "Heinz 57" approach to information systems characterized in many institutions. Presented here will be a short background of data processing at The Children's Hospital, necessary to show the explosive growth of data processing in a medical institution, a description of how word processing configuration played a determining role in equipment selection, and a sampling of actual word processing---mainframe applications that have been accomplished.
