For children of the 1960s, rocketry was simple. The sleek red Thunderbird 3 tripped into space without the tiresome dropping of stages, returned in its entirety to an island launch pad and refuelled for another mission. So how close are we to Gerry Anderson's vision of the reusable rocket?
