Spectrum allocation in 2 GHz band with easy transition to IMT-2000 (3G) mobile services in India

This paper describes some strategies and issues for introduction of new services especially in the 2 GHz spectrum in India with a view to transition to 3G (IMT2000) in future. For India not having licensed the 2GHz band to private operators so far is perhaps a blessing especially from the possible connects to IMT-2000 services in future. In that sense the IMT-2000 allocated bands could be reserved either in part or full without conflict with the only condition remaining that the existing 2 GHz (1.9-2.3 GHz) fixed point to point microwave links will be moved away over a period of time. In India, exploiting the new 2 GHz frequency spectrum may not be so much dictated by spectrum insufficiency in the existing 800/900 MHz bands (as full bands are not available for use by the service providers), but desirable perhaps from the variety of services the 2 GHz band is currently capable of as well as the desire to fall in line internationally for the IMT-2000 services.
