Simplification by elimination

The Petroleum and Chemical industry continues to test the boundaries of project and system size to deliver bigger facilities, at less cost, and in a shorter timeframe. The effect is an increased pressure on systems, engineering capabilities, and disciplines that are dependent on others for information to deliver on a reduced schedule. This paper will present two key ideas for electrical system design to increase execution certainty and remove dependencies. The first will be the concept of elimination: removing or rearranging components specifically for control and management of power systems to simplify interfaces and reduce cable. The second will be simplification: understanding how the integration of instrument control and safety systems with smart motor control centers increases design certainty to reduce schedule and dependencies.
