Interference with Digital Transmission Signal due to Lightning Surges Induced on Paired Cables

This paper clarifies the characteristics of lightning surges induced on paired cables and estimates the extent of interference with digitally transmitted signals due to induced lightning surges. Two kinds of lightning surges were observed using surge waveform recorders. One is a longitudinal surge between a pair of conductors and ground. The other is a transverse surge between two conductor wires in a pair. As a result of the observation, peak voltage distributions and waveform distributions for lightning surges were clarified. The duration of the digital signal interruption was estimated based on the characteristics of longitudinal and transverse lightning surges. Using these results, interference to digital transmissions by induced lightning surges can be estimated on paired cables.
