Social media for disaster relief — Geo distributed social service system

When a disaster like Fire, Accident etc. occurs in a remote place, immediate service has to be provided to rescue the people from such an incident. The mobile communication and web services may help them to overcome the situation. In this type of emergency incidents, the most important means is communication without which rescue efforts cannot take place quickly. So, we propose an emergency system using social networking platform, called GDSS (Geo Distributed Social Service System) to provide immediate assistance. Twitter, Facebook and other social networks have been used to reach people who need help during such incidents nowadays. Proposed GDSS is an emergency distress relief system using social networking platform for dealing with disaster situations. To provide the relief service, a dedicated web service which is designed for any type of disaster management is constructed. Facebook or any social media can be used for communicating with the dedicated web service for disaster management. People can upload the picture /image taken at the time of incident once they come across disaster, using the mobile in social media (Twitter, Facebook) to this web service. The web service will inform the nearest relief center and people at the nearest place to provide service and to take measures for recovery. The system's performance is analysed. The implementation is done through social media, geographical navigator and Cassandra, a distributed database for storing images. The result shows the proposed system outperforms compared to existing systems.
