Trust factor and reliability-over-a-period-of-time as key differentiators in IoT enabled services

With the growing Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology in almost all walks of our life, small embedded devices will become the enabler of new and innovative services in time to come. These devices will connect the physical world to the internet as data generating nodes. The data generated from these devices is going to be humongous and Big Data Analytics tools will be used to mine the data for information of interest depending on the end service under consideration. While there are so many IoT devices around and each day more and more types of IoT devices are coming into existence. This leaves us with two major questions, one is reliability of the sensors and devices which are expected to work in different environmental/ambient condition. Second is the trust factor of the enabled services from such devices. The trust modeling for IoT devices, data generated and the data analytics has not been in the focus and much of the work is done in a more distributed manner. This short paper articulates and exemplifies the need of Reliability-over-a-period-of-time (ROPT) and Trust Factor (TF) as key differentiators between IoT devices and IoT enabled services.
