Compact T-shaped dipole antenna for GPS application

In this paper, a development of compact T-shaped dipole antenna is investigated for Ground Positioning System (GPS) application. The proposed antenna is equipped by a balance-to-unbalanced (balun) circuit to transform the antenna into the unbalance circuit feedable from a coaxial cable. The balun circuit is made of a λ/4 element which is also used as a stand of the antenna. Prior to fabrication, the proposed antenna is analyzed through the simulation to achieve the optimum antenna geometry implementable for the realization. From the simulation result, the proposed compact T-shaped dipole antenna resonates at frequency of 1575MHz with the gain of 6.37dBi and the reflection coefficient of −11.93dB corresponds to voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) value of 1.68 and the −10dB working bandwidth of 150MHz ranges from the frequency of 1500MHz to 1650MHz. Meanwhile, the realized compact T-shaped dipole antenna has the gain of 6.01dBi and the reflection coefficient of −13.74dB at frequency of 1575MHz which corresponds to VSWR value of 1.52 and the −10dB working bandwidth of 190MHz ranges from the frequency of 1470MHz to 1660MHz.
