Demodulation techniques for IEEE 802.15.6 IR-UWB DBPSK WBAN transceivers

In this paper, three different DBPSK (Differential binary phase-shift keying) demodulation techniques for IEEE 802.15.6 IR-UWB (Impulse Radio Ultra Wide-band) WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) transceivers are proposed for high QoS (Quality of Service) mode and for high priority medical applications. The proposed DBPSK demodulation techniques are evaluated under different WBAN channel models (CM3 and CM4) for Bit error rate /Packet error rate (BER /PER) performance. Further, the BER/PER performance of the complete IR-UWB DBPSK WBAN transceivers using the proposed demodulation techniques are also presented. The BER/PER simulation results show that the proposed demodulation techniques meet the specified BER/PER requirements of the IEEE 802.15.6 PHY (Physical) layer definitions. Simulation results clearly shows that the proposed EDD (Energy Detection based Demodulation) technique gives superior BER/PER performance in comparison to the other proposed CDD (Correlator Detection based Demodulation) and WDD (Windowing Detection based Demodulation) demodulation techniques. This, in turn, results in reduced hardware complexity from the point of view of implementation.
