Surfactant Treatment Using Nanosecond Pulsed Powers and Action of Electric Discharges on Solution Liquid

The treatment of a surfactant aqueous solution, including nonylphenol ethoxylate NPE, which is one of the persistent pollutants, was investigated using nanosecond pulsed power system. The surfactant treatment using a nanosecond pulsed power system was compared with that using an external ozonizer. The surfactant was not sufficiently treated with the ozonizer. It was suggested that the water treatment using only ozone would decompose persistent pollutants insufficiently. Even when ozone concentration was the same in the water treatment reactor, more hydroxyl radical was produced by using pulsed discharges than an ozonizer. Therefore, the direct effects of discharges, such as ultraviolet rays and shockwaves, on the solution would contribute to the production of hydroxyl radical. The pH value and the electric conductivity of the solutions influenced the production amount of hydroxyl radical. For faster and stronger treatment, nanosecond pulsed power system, which generated more hydroxyl radical should be applied to the water treatment.
