Value perception on an offshore crane using electrical- vs. hydraulic main machinery system

The objective of this paper is to investigate the impact on the value perception of an offshore crane, mainly by using frequency controlled electrical versus Electrical/Diesel hydraulic power. The value assessment is done by applying system engineering methods. First, a simple product breakdown structure of the solution is presented. Later, a five-aspect taxonomy will breakdown the system information into five categories, namely structural, behavioral, contextual, temporal and perceptual. Emphasis is given on the perception of value when the structure and behavior of the crane system changes from traditional diesel plus hydraulic to electrical engine system.
