Pictogram and ERP study — A point of view from friendly design

Through brain wave ERP (Event-related potential) experimental analysis, effects on readability by interactions between two independent variables: " Familiarity towards the Olympic games (Summer games/Winter games)" and " Graphical style expression (Graphic symbology/Abstract symbology) ", on Olympic pictograms has been studied. The results showed that, regardless of the graphical expression method, associating with unfamiliarity to the Olympic games resulted in low readability and larger ERP P600 (LPC, LPP) amplitude distribution in left brain. This phenomenon suggested that less aware information among subtropical communities, in this case, the unfamiliar winter Olympic games, its corresponding pictogram recognition will induce confusion and dislike among subjects.
