Design of an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor supported by the topology optimization algorithm

The purpose of this study is to find a motor topology which offers the best combination of both permanent magnet and reluctance torque components as well as the best possible torque per volume ratio. To perform this task a topological optimization method using genetic algorithms, embedded into experience based design is proposed. The interacting principle of permanent magnet and reluctance torque components and their importance are shown. Results obtained by the proposed optimization method are discussed and compared with results obtained using state-of-the art machine design.
