Three-Phase Zvezda-Type Plasmatrons

A description and the operating characteristics of the high-power alternating current (ac) electric arc plasmatrons are outlined. The method to introduce magnetic rotation of the ac arc root to reduce electrode erosion is described both theoretically and experimentally. The results of electrode erosion measurement are presented and the duration of the plasmatron continuous operation up to the electrodes replacement is predicted. The possible applications of the Zvezda-type plasmatrons are briefly described.
