THD and EMI performance study of foil-wound inductor of LCL filter for high power density converter

The harmonics and electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by grid-connected power converter have to be well filtered by a passive filter to achieve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). This paper evaluates the performance of two different winding methods of a LCL filter in a grid-connected high power density converter (HPDC) for the purpose of power quality control and EMI suppression. The foil-would inductor has shown excellent high frequency performance with reduced size. It is implemented in a LCL filter of a 30 kW, 230 V/400Hz three-phase grid-connected converter prototype and its THD and EMI suppression performance is verified experimentally.
