System simulation and comparison of advanced flue gas clean-up processes in coal-fired power plant using SALT code

The authors report on the use of the System Analysis Language Translator (SALT) computer code to evaluate the cleanup performance and cost of several advanced flue-gas cleanup (FGC) processes, including fluidized-bed copper oxidization (FBCO), fluidized-bed sodium absorption (FBSA), electron-beam/spray-dryer (EBSD), and electron-beam/ammonia-injection (EBAI) processes. The simulation results show that: (1) All four FGC processes can be expected to remove over 90% of the SO/sub x/ and over 95% of the NO/sub x/ from the flue gas of a coal-fired power plant. (2) The EBAI model has the highest NO/sub x/ removal efficiency for given pollutant emission constraints. (3) Cleanup cost is about 3 to 35% of the electric cost, depending primarily on the required SO/sub x/ removal efficiency and the type of FGC process. (4) Cleanup cost for an FBCO or FBSA process is cheaper than that of an EBAI or EBSD process.<
