Improvement of Autonomous Anti-disaster Base Station by Combination of Satellite and Wireless Networks

To cope with large-scale disasters, we have been developing the Autonomous Anti-disaster Base Station. The station is powered by solar cells and batteries and equipped with connections to the satellite Internet service and wireless LAN. In this study, we conducted a communication experiment between the Autonomous Anti-disaster Base Station, located in University of Shizuoka, and other disaster prevention centers to enable the joint use of the station with other organizations and examined the feasibility of joint use covering the wide area. Also, in order to improve the connectivity when a large number of users access the Autonomous Anti-disaster Base Station with their smart devices via wireless LAN, we added a micro server to the station and further made an upgrade by changing the wireless LAN access point. Furthermore, to evaluate the improved Autonomous Anti-disaster Base Station, we conducted a demonstration experiment of the station in conjunction with the university's safety exercise. The experiment verified that the improvement made on the Autonomous Anti-disaster Base Station enabled a better access from users' smart devices via wireless LAN.
